Dave's Youth and Early Childhood
Dave is the youngest of five children born to Jack and Emma Goodman. The Goodman family was a solid blue collar family. Dave's dad Jack was 17 when Pearl Harbor was bombed. Upon his graduation from Ventura High School, Jack immediately went into the U.S. Army Air Corps. Following the war, Jack became a Union Construction Electrician, and was a 60-year member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers local 952 in Ventura. Many of those years, Jack served as president of the local.
Dave's mom Emma worked her way through college while raising a family. Emma graduated from Ventura College with a degree in Library Science, then worked for the US Navy as a Librarian at Port Hueneme's NCEL.
Education and Employment
Dave attended public schools in Oxnard. He graduated from Rio Mesa High School in 1979. Dave joined the U.S. Merchant Marines, and spent a year at sea. Following that year, Dave served a two-year mission for his church in Australia. Returning from Australia, Dave attended Ventura College and began his career in Law Enforcement.
Dave has owned and operated local businesses in Ventura County for over 30 years.
In preparation for his run for Congress, Dave returned to school and in 2021 earned an MBA from University of East London.
Dave's law enforcement career began with an internship with the Ventura County District Attorney's Bureau of Investigation. Following Dave's internship, Dave attended the Rio Hondo Police Academy. After graduating from the academy, Dave was hired by the Port Hueneme Police Department, and served there as a Level One Reserve Police Officer. Dave also worked for the Ventura College Police Department, and the Ventura County Probation Department, where he was assigned to the Frank Colston Youth Center, and Juvenile Hall.
A Lifetime of Community Service Through Volunteerism
From an early age, Dave's parents instilled in him a desire to be of service to others. Dave volunteered with his church from age 10, serving as a missionary in Australia from ages 19-21, and as a Lay Minister in his congregation for more than 30 years. Dave is an Eagle Scout, and served within the scouting organization while earning his Eagle. As an adult, Dave continued his involvement with the Boy Scouts. Dave has been a Troop Committee Member, Troop Committee Chair, Assistant Scoutmaster, Scoutmaster, and Merit Badge Counselor.
Dave's service with the Ventura County District Attorney was in a volunteer capacity, as well as Dave's service with the Port Hueneme Police Department. Over the course of Dave's service to the City of Port Hueneme, Dave donated over 5,000 hours.
Currently, Dave serves the Ventura County Board of Supervisors in a volunteer capacity as Fish and Game Commissioner.
Dave is also the Adopt A Highway volunteer on the 101 Freeway between Rice and Central Avenue. Dave is always looking for others to help him pick up trash along the freeway! Message Dave if you would like to participate with him in this very rewarding community service project.
